- Category: Game Assets & Art (https://lootllama.net/category/game-assets-art/)
- Best for: Pixel art games that need real, editable low-res sprites
- Strength: Models trained by working pixel artists output genuine 16–384px pixel art with clean outlines and controlled palettes, not upscaled fake pixels
- Caveat: It's pay-per-generation from a prepaid balance with no monthly plan, so costs add up when you iterate a lot on RD Pro
- Pricing: Paid (Free starting balance; pay per image from $0.03)

## Overview

Retro Diffusion is an AI pixel art generator from Astropulse whose models are built and trained by pixel artists on hand-curated data. Instead of images that only look pixelated, it produces real low-resolution grids from 16×16 icons up to 384×384 scenes, with deliberate palettes and single-pixel outlines, ready to edit or drop into an engine.

It has four engines: RD Pro (flagship, up to 9 reference images to keep a character consistent), RD Plus (largest style library, batches of up to 16), RD Fast (cheapest drafts) and Animations (walk cycles, battle sprites, VFX and 8-direction rotations, or animate any finished pixel art image). The editor adds inpainting, canvas expansion, background removal, palette remapping, tiling textures, wang tilesets with SpriteFusion export, UI kits and custom styles from a few reference images. A newer Low-Poly model builds low-poly 3D models with pixel textures that export to Godot, Unity, Unreal, Blender, Blockbench or Minecraft. An HTTP API and a hosted MCP server let Claude, Cursor and other assistants generate pixel art directly.

## Key features

- True grid-aligned pixel art from 16×16 to 384×384
- RD Pro, RD Plus, RD Fast and Animations models
- Reference images and custom styles for consistent characters
- Walk cycles, battle sprites, VFX and 8-direction rotations
- Wang tilesets with SpriteFusion export, UI kits and item sheets
- Low-Poly 3D models with pixel textures for Godot, Unity, Unreal and Blender
- HTTP API and hosted MCP server

## Use it for

- Generate on-model pixel art characters and animate them into sprite sheets
- Build a full tileset for a top-down or platformer game from one prompt
- Fix fake AI pixel art into real grid-aligned pixels with the free Pixel Art Fixer

## Pricing

New accounts start with a free balance (enough for dozens of RD Fast generations, no payment details required). After that you pay per generation from a prepaid balance: RD Fast $0.03, RD Plus $0.06 and RD Pro $0.18 per image, animations from $0.07 per clip. The price is shown before you generate and failed generations are refunded automatically. Teams can get monthly invoicing and custom models. Generated art can be used commercially.

## Getting started

Create a free account at retrodiffusion.ai and try RD Fast with the starting balance, then move favorites to RD Pro. Developers can get an API key and use the MCP setup guides on GitHub.
